Nihongo no Densetsu

I'm a huge fan of drawing oekaki online. According to the Oekaki community I'm on at www.ochiba.net/oekaki , oekaki is お絵描, transliterated as 'oekaki,' is pronounced: 'oh eh kah kee.' Oekaki is the Japanese word for 'painting.' 絵 is the kanji 'kai' or 'e' for 'picture,' and 描 is the kanji for 'byou' or 'ka(ku)' which means 'depict.' In net-speak 'oekaki' means 'to paint pictures online.' Using various java applications, artists can paint pictures online in a BBS evironment. Most oekaki BBS environments are made from cgi scripts or php web applications. One of the most famous oekaki boards, www.oekakibbs.com , is dominantly japanese, but also has many different and talented artists from all over the world drawing on the board. Oekaki is interesting because it is a relatively simple program compared to software like Adobe Photoshop, and yet, artists can create beautiful and mind boggling art on this program. There are different brushes and textures availiable to the artist. But I feel that the funnest part of oekaki'ng is the whole community aspect of it. Artists all post to the same board, and its fun to look at and appreciate other artist's works and perhaps pick up some tips along the way.
